Regenerative Medicine: A Natural Approach to Treating Injuries

In the past, the majority of injuries were treated according to the PRICE principle (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Today, Medical Director Cary Nelson, MD, Executive Director Kari Hawkins, DC, and the other specialists at Advanced Integrative Medical Center in Redondo Beach, California, practice regenerative and integrative medicine to help you recover from pain and injuries naturally.

Body, heal thyself

Our team focuses on your body’s natural ability to heal. Using various methods including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and stem cell treatments, we repair and replace injured tissue with newly created, healthy tissue in many areas of the body, including:

  • Knees
  • Elbows
  • Hips
  • Wrists
  • Ankles
  • Shoulders

Types of injuries

Our providers help you heal from a wide range of injuries, including:

  • Meniscal, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) tears to the knee
  • Rotator cuff tears at the shoulder
  • Acute ankle sprains
  • Tendonitis in the shoulders and hips

Regenerative treatments help your body heal

We utilize a variety of treatments to help your body mend naturally.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy

Our team draws healing cells, platelets, and growth factors from your blood. We then process this platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in a centrifuge and inject it right into your tissue to promote healing. PRP helps repair damage, improve function and reduce pain at your injury site.

Stem cell treatments

We also use mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) extracted from the body. These types of cells essentially act as blank slates, developing into whatever type of cell is needed without alarming your immune system. Stem cells can be drawn from your blood, fat, or bone marrow. In order to mend your Achilles tendon, for example, we would place stem cells near that area to promote healing.

Our providers will inject an anesthetic and/or steroids directly into painful joints to relieve inflammation and pain to help you resume normal activities, such as physical therapy.

Are you a good candidate for regenerative medicine?

We evaluate each patient, based upon specific criteria, to decide which options will work best for them. You may be a good candidate for regenerative treatments if you:

  • Suffer from tendon pain or injuries that hinder your day-to-day activities.
  • Still feel pain after employing other non-surgical treatments, such as physical therapy.
  • Find medication and/or surgery aren’t appropriate solutions.

Contraindications for PRP

While the majority of our patients benefit from regenerative treatments, we don’t recommend platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections for patients with certain medical conditions, metastatic disease, or bleeding disorders. If you are pregnant or anemic, we can help you find other options to relieve your pain.
